Workers Compensation Underwriter

The Workers' Compensation Underwriter will be responsible forevaluating risk and determining appropriate coverage terms and pricing for newand renewal workers' compensation policies. This role plays a vital part inensuring our clients are adequately protected while maintaining profitabilityand adherence to underwriting guidelines. The ideal candidate will have stronganalytical skills, attention to detail, and experience working in a fast-pacedenvironment. PEO experience is stronglypreferred.
Responsibilities
- Review and evaluate workers' compensation applications, loss runs, and supporting documentation to assess risk exposure.
- Determine proper classification codes and pricing based on NCCI and state-specific guidelines.
- Handle policy endorsements for new worksites, changes in state exposure, and client site endorsement adjustments to maintain compliance and accurate coverage.
- Collaborate with internal teams including sales, client services, and risk management to support new business and retention.
- Analyze and interpret loss data to make informed underwriting decisions.
- Maintain accurate and detailed underwriting files and documentation.
- Participate in the renewal and audit process for existing clients.
- Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes to ensure compliance and competitiveness.
- Communicate with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders in a professional and timely manner.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, or related field (preferred)
- 3–5 years of workers' compensation underwriting experience
- Experience within a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) (preferred)
- Familiarity with NCCI classification systems and underwriting procedures
- Experience with underwriting systems and CRM platforms (preferred)
Skills and Abilities
- Underwriting expertise with strong knowledge of workers' compensation policies, principles, and rating guidelines
- Risk assessment and decision-making skills based on data, loss history, and operational exposure
- Familiarity with NCCI and state-specific classification and rating systems
- Analytical thinking to evaluate complex business and claims data
- High attention to detail in reviewing documentation, coverage terms, and compliance
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
- Time management and organizational skills to handle multiple submissions and deadlines
- Problem-solving abilities to resolve classification or coverage issues
- Understanding of claims handling processes and their impact on underwriting
- Technical proficiency in Excel, underwriting software, and CRM tools
- Team collaboration mindset with experience working across departments
- Knowledge of federal and state workers’ compensation regulations
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in a Professional Employer Organization (PEO)
- Knowledge of multistate underwriting and high-volume client management
- Familiarity with claims handling processes and safety initiatives
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, or a related field (preferred)

Salary:
$70,000.00 – $85,000.00 (commensurate with experience)
